Daily Brief: National ID integration and EU wallet requirements
Malaysian eKYC provider integrates national ID to fight scams while EU member states prepare for 2026 digital identity wallet mandates.
Innov8tif Solutions has integrated Malaysia's national MyDigital ID platform into its EMAS eKYC system [5]. The integration adds a national identity check to existing facial biometric and document verification used for remote customer onboarding [5].
The move follows a period of high fraud losses in Malaysia, which lost RM54.02 billion (US$12.8 billion) to scams in 2024, according to a Penang Institute policy paper [5]. Identity theft accounted for 21 percent of those scams, the second most common type behind investment scams [5]. Laurence Liong, chief commercial officer at Innov8tif, said businesses need more reliable verification as digital identity fraud becomes more sophisticated [5].
EU member states must provide at least one European Digital Identity Wallet to citizens and residents by the end of 2026 [6]. Payment companies now have to decide how customers must prove they are legitimate payers and how much personal information they need to disclose to do so [6].
Digital wallets appear to merge identification, authentication, and payment authorization into a single check [6]. While the user sees a single action, the process still relies on separate layers, including biometric unlock and tokenized cards that carry cryptographic proof of device binding [6].
